Datasource Introspection User Interface for GraphQL API Schema and Resolver Generation

This patent protects an architectural system and interactive graphical user interface (GUI) designed to automate the creation of GraphQL APIs by introspecting diverse backend datasources (such as relational databases and REST APIs). As co-inventor and UI architect, I built the user interface that allows developers to visually inspect backend datasources, select database schema objects (tables, columns, operations), REST objects, or API interfaces, and automatically generate complete GraphQL schemas and resolver functions without writing Schema Definition Language (SDL) or manual resolver boilerplate.

The Problem It Solves

The Manual GraphQL & Resolver Bottleneck

Developing a GraphQL API traditionally requires significant manual effort: an API developer must author a GraphQL schema using Schema Definition Language (SDL) defining object types, fields, queries, and mutations. In addition, the developer must manually write custom resolver functions and data-fetching logic that map schema fields to backend databases and REST services. Prior introspection techniques only operated on pre-existing GraphQL schemas or lacked the ability to introspect heterogeneous backend systems with granular selection of tables, columns, and REST operations.

The Patented Innovation

Automated Introspection & Resolver Synthesis

The patented system introduces a schema introspection subsystem and schema design GUI that connects to various backend datasources (relational databases, REST APIs via OpenAPI specifications, microservices). Developers visually select individual elements—such as specific database tables, columns, or REST operations—and the system automatically generates the complete GraphQL schema and the underlying resolver functions. Developers can further visually edit resolvers and publish the compiled API directly to a runtime GraphQL server without writing boilerplate code.

My Role: Building the Datasource Selection & Schema Generation UI

In this patent, we generate GraphQL schemas from various backend datasources like relational databases, REST APIs, and enterprise web services. I designed and built the interactive User Interface that empowers developers to inspect connected datasources and visually select database schema objects (tables, columns, operations) and REST objects or interfaces (endpoints, HTTP operations, and payload models). Once selected, the platform automatically synthesizes the complete GraphQL API schema and generates the underlying execution resolvers, eliminating weeks of manual coding.

Architecture Breakdown

Key Capabilities of the Patented System

Core subsystems and workflows defined in US Patent US12339836B2.

Heterogeneous Datasource Introspection

Inspects relational databases (tables, columns, primary/foreign keys, operations) and REST API datasources (OpenAPI specifications, endpoints, query parameters, responses) to discover structural schema metadata.

Interactive Schema Design GUI

Provides visual introspection screens where developers can pick and choose exact database entities, columns, and REST endpoints to expose as GraphQL objects, fields, and operations.

Automated Resolver Generation

Automatically generates resolver functions and metadata to fetch and mutate data from the underlying datasources, eliminating hand-coded data access layers.

Visual Resolver Editing & Publishing

Enables developers to visually inspect structural information, modify resolver functions, and publish production-ready GraphQL schemas to runtime servers for live client querying.
